Llama open-weight models plus Meta's enormous distribution (WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Ray-Ban smart glasses) make it impossible to ignore. In 2025 Meta reorganised into Superintelligence Labs under Alexandr Wang, paid nine-figure packages to poach researchers, and committed to multi-gigawatt data centers.

Meta can afford to spend more than almost anyone and reach more people than anyone. Its open-weight strategy also shapes what the rest of the industry builds on.
